LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY

I would guess that most of us wish we were better at praying. We are a little unsure of what we should say when we pray. What should we pray for?

The disciples went to Jesus and asked him to teach them some prayers. Other teachers have written prayers for their followers, and the disciples wanted Jesus to give them prayers also. Jesus teaches them the Our Father prayer. Jesus takes a longer time teaching an important lesson about prayer: If you want to pray well, you need to trust God!

When we pray, we are not trying to change God's mind. Prayer is not a matter of informing God about a lot, of things God doesn't know. More exactly the goal of prayer is to allow God to change us so that we come to desire what God desires.

Jesus teaches us that the most important thing in prayer is to place ourselves in God's hands. We are always tempted to want control of our own lives. We might want God to change us, but we want to tell God exactly what that change should be.

Real, profound prayer is a matter of allowing God to make us into whatever God wants us to be. But we find that frightening, Very simply, Jesus says that God will never hurt us ..

The most important thing to. remember when you pray is to be sincere. Offer to God your joys, your sorrows, your hopes and your fears. God will not always give you exactly what you ask for, but something much better. You may not understand what God is doing for you today or even in this lifetime, but if we real1y trust in God. we want God's will to be done.

The Lord's Prayer

I cannot say 'our' ifllive only for myself I cannot say 'Father' if! do not approach God like a child. I cannot say 'who art in heaven' if I am not laying up some treasure there right now. I cannot say 'Hallowed be thy name' if I am careless with that name. I cannot say 'Thy king dom come' if I am not working to actualize it in the here and now. I cannot say 'Thy will be done' if I am resentful of that will for me at this moment. I cannot say 'on earth as it is in heaven' if I don't look OD heaven as my future home. I cannot say 'Give us our daily bread' if I am. overanxious about tomorrow. I cannot say 'Forgive us our I, trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us' if I am waiting to settle a score with someone. I cannot say 'Lead us not into tempta tion' ifl deliberately put myself in a place to be tempted .. Icannot say Deliver us from evil' if I am not prepared to pray as though everything depends on God and work as though everything depends on me. Dag Hammmerskjoid wrote, "Hallowed be thy name, not mine. Thy il kingdom come, not mine, Thy will be done, not mine".
