«The Spirit led Jesus into the desert that He be put to the test by the devil»
Today, we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent, and this “strong” liturgic time is a spiritual path leading us to participate in the great mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ. John Paul II says «Each year, the Lenten Season is set before us as a good opportunity for the intensification of prayer and penance, opening hearts to the docile welcoming of the divine will. During Lent, a spiritual journey is outlined for us that prepares us to relive the Great Mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. This is done primarily by listening to the Word of God more devoutly and by practicing mortification more generously, thanks to which it is possible to render greater assistance to those in need».
Lent and today's Gospel teach us that life is a path leading us to Heaven. But, to deserve it, we must first overcome our temptations. «Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert that He be put to the test by the devil» (Mt 4:1). By allowing him to be tempted, Jesus wanted to show us how we can fight and overcome our temptations: with our trust in God and in prayer, through grace and fortitude.
Temptations may be described as the “enemies of the soul”. In fact, they can be summarized and determined by three aspects. In the first place, “the world”: «order these stones to turn into bread» (Mt 4:3). It implies living to possess material things only.
Secondly, “the devil”: «if you kneel and worship me» (Mt 4:9). It conveys the greed for power.
And, last but not least, “the flesh”: «throw yourself down» (Mt 4:6), which means placing our confidence only in our body. St. Thomas Aquinas explains it better when saying that «the cause of temptations are the causes of concupiscence: the pleasures of the flesh, a drive for glory and the lust for power».

PRAYER FOR THE BEGINNING OF LENT
Jesus, beloved friend, you call us to a season of
growth and repentance.
You have high hopes for us; may we not disappoint you.
May we see your face ahead of us, beaming at the end
of our Lenten journey.
Give us strength and energy to run toward you during this season.
Give us integrity and generosity in each new challenge.
We as this of you who live and reign with God the Father in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, on God for ever and ever. Amen.

HOLY HOUR. The members of the Sacred Heart will have their monthly Holy Hour this Sunday, March 1st. after the 7:00 a.m. in the St. Michael Chapel.
The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Michael Chapel continues next Tuesday, March 3rd from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Fast and Abstinence. Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the major days for fasting in general for those who have reached the age 18 and are not yet 60. Abstinence means no meat on those days for those who are age 14 [or over]. General canon law says that all Fridays are days of abstinence. The US rules for abstinence from meat includes all Fridays during Lent; Fast (small meals, no snacks) and Abstinence (as in universal rules — no meat) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS are every Friday, with the pro-life rosary at 5:00 p.m. Stations of the
Cross at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Spanish
community will have the Stations of the Cross around the school grounds.
ENVELOPES. Please pick up your contribution envelopes for the new year 2020 they are available after all the masses in the Hall. We have some boxes available for those who don’t have and would like to get one. You can also pick them up in the rectory during office hours.

What to Give up for Lent
Lent is a special time of reflection and faith, practiced in prayer and by the act of giving up something. That “something” depends on the person observing Lent, with the main guidelines being that it has to be something that’s challenging to give up during this period. (In other words, giving up chores wouldn’t fit the bill. For Western Christian Churches that observe the church year, Lent starts on Ash Wednesday (February 26). For many denominations, this begins what the church considers the "forty day fast within Lent"—the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday (April 12). But the 40 days aren’t as straightforward in regards to timing. For one, you’ll notice that there are actually 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. This is because the Sundays of Lent aren’t “prescribed days of fast and abstinence” by the church. Basically, it means that it’s up to the individual to continue abstaining from the item or act of their choosing on Sundays.
In all, the act of giving up something for Lent is to practice self-discipline and remember the sacrifices Jesus made. Here are a few common items and acts that many choose to give up for Lent.

«Sed perfectos como es perfecto vuestro Padre celestial»
Hoy, la Palabra de Dios, nos enseña que la fuente original y la medida de la santidad están en Dios: «Sed perfectos como es perfecto vuestro Padre celestial» (Mt 5,48). Él nos inspira, y hacia Él caminamos. El sendero se recorre bajo la nueva ley, la del Amor. El amor es el seguro conductor de nuestros ideales, expresados tan certeramente en este quinto capítulo del Evangelio de san Mateo.
La antigua ley del Talión del libro del Éxodo (cf. Ex 21,23-35) —que quiso ser una ley que evitara las venganzas despiadadas y restringir al “ojo por ojo”, el desagravio bélico— es definitivamente superada por la Ley del amor. En estos versículos se entrega toda una Carta Magna de la moral creyente: el amor a Dios y al prójimo.
El Papa Benedicto XVI nos dice: «Solo el servicio al prójimo abre mis ojos a lo que Dios hace por mí y a lo mucho que me ama». Jesús nos presenta la ley de una justicia sobreabundante, pues el mal no se vence haciendo más daño, sino expulsándolo de la vida, cortando así su eficacia contra nosotros.
Para vencer —nos dice Jesús— se ha de tener un gran dominio interior y la suficiente claridad de saber por cuál ley nos regimos: la del amor incondicional, gratuito y magnánimo. El amor lo llevó a la Cruz, pues el odio se vence con amor. Éste es el camino de la victoria, sin violencia, con humildad y amor gozoso, pues Dios es el Amor hecho acción.
Y si nuestros actos proceden de este mismo amor que no defrauda, el Padre nos reconocerá como sus hijos.
Éste es el camino perfecto, el del amor sobreabundante que nos pone en la corriente del Reino, cuya más fiel expresión es la sublime manifestación del desbordante amor que Dios ha derramado en nuestros corazones por el don del Espíritu Santo (cf. Rom 5,5).

Oración para DE CUARESMA
Padre de bondad y amor. Estamos a punto de iniciando la Cuaresma, ayúdanos a prepararnos para hace de este un tiempo productivo que me lleve a descubrir lo profundo de tu amor y que al final descubramos en la imagen de Jesús crucificado que eres un Dios vivo y verdadero. Amén.

ADORACION. La adoración del Santísimo en la capilla de San Miguel continúa este martes 3 de marzo de 7:00 a.m. a 5:30 p.m.
REGLAS DE CUARESMA. El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo, son días de ayuno y abstinencia. Todos los viernes de Cuaresma, son días de abstinencia de carne. Abstinencia de carne es para todos los que han cumplido 14 años en adelante, la ancianidad, por sí sola, no exime de esta ley de abstinencia. Ayuno consiste en una comida completa al día para todos los que han cumplido 18 años, hasta el comienzo de los sesenta.
VIA CRUCIS. El Vía Crucis se reza todos los viernes comenzando a las 5:00 p.m. con el rosario por la vida, seguido del Vía Crucis a las 5:30 p.m. Como es nuestra costumbre lo hacemos alrededor
de la escuela. Después del Vía Crucis tendremos la adoración y bendición del Santísimo en la iglesia. Ven y acompáñanos a caminar con el Señor en su calvario.
MISALES. Todavía nos quedan algunos misales para el nuevo año, los tenemos disponibles a la venta los domingos después de la misa, el precio es de $6.50. También los pueden obtener en la rectoría en horas de oficina.
LA SEGUNDA COLECTA del próximo domingo, 8 de marzo será para las necesidades de la iglesia. Gracias.
El Comité de recaudación de fondos de St. Joseph agradece a todos por su apoyo y participación en la venta de comida que tuvimos el sábado 22 de febrero de 2020. Gracias al apoyo de todos, la actividad fue un éxito. ¡¡¡¡¡GRACIAS!!!!!
La Cuaresma
En el rito latino, la Cuaresma comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina justo antes de la Misa de la Cena del Señor en la tarde del Jueves Santo. La duración de cuarenta días proviene de varias referencias bíblicas y simboliza la prueba por la que pasó Jesús al permanecer durante 40 días en el desierto de Judea, previos a su misión pública. También simbolizan los 40 días que duró el diluvio universal, además de los 40 años de la marcha del pueblo israelita por el desierto, y las 40 décadas que duró la esclavitud de los judíos en Egipto.
A lo largo del tiempo de Cuaresma, los cristianos son llamados a reforzar su fe mediante diversos actos de penitencia y reflexión. La Cuaresma tiene cinco domingos más el Domingo de Ramos (seis en total), en cuyas lecturas los temas de la conversión, el pecado, la penitencia y el perdón son dominantes. No es un tiempo triste, sino más bien meditativo y recogido. Es, por excelencia, el tiempo de conversión y penitencia del año litúrgico. Por eso, en la misa católica no se canta el Gloria en los ritos iniciales (excepto el jueves santo, en la misa de la cena del Señor o en fiestas y solemnidades: La solemnidad de San José siempre cae en Cuaresma), ni el Aleluya antes del evangelio.
El color litúrgico asociado a este período es el morado, asociado a la penitencia y el sacrificio, a excepción del cuarto domingo que se usa el rosa, mezcla de morado y blanco. El Domingo de Ramos, llamado Domingo de la Pasión ya se usa el color rojo por ser ya la celebración en día de precepto de la Pasión de Cristo (El Viernes Santo no es día de precepto).
