The Ascension of the Lord
June 1-2, 2019
«And as He blessed them, He withdrew (and was taken to heaven)»
Today, in the Ascension of our Lord, we once more remember the “mission” that we have been entrusted with: «And you are witnesses of these things» (Lk 24:48). God's Word is still alive today: «But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth» (Acts 1:8). Also today, there is a current and urgent demand for the Word of God: «Go, therefore, and make disciples from all nations» (Mt 28:19); «He said to them, ‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature’» (Mk 16:15).
In this Solemnity, the invitation of our Master —wrapped up in our humanity— who finishes his mission in this world, strongly reverberates, while leaving us to sit at the right hand of the Father and send us the strength from above, the Holy Spirit.
But I cannot but wonder: —Is the Lord acting through me? Which are the signs attached to my testimony? And I remember the verse of the poet: «You cannot wait for God to tell you: ‘I am’. A God that reveals his power does not make sense. You should know God blows through you from the very beginning, and if your chest burns and shows nothing, then God is working in it».
And this must be our sign: the fire burning inside, the fire that —as with the prophet Jeremiah— cannot be stopped: The Word of God is alive. And one feels like saying: «All you peoples, clap your hands; shout to God with joyful cries (...). God mounts the throne amid shouts of joy; the Lord, amid trumpet blasts. Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise» (Ps 47:2.6-7).
His kingdom is germinating in people's hearts, in your heart, like a seed about to bear fruit. —Sing, dance, for your Lord. And, if you do not know how to, place the Word in your lips until it comes down to your heart: —God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I can get to know you. Throw your light upon the eyes of my heart so that I understand the expectancy you are showing me to, the wealth of the glory you have ready for me and the greatness of your power, that you have displayed with the resurrection of Christ. «The Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have told you» (Jn 14:26). In these last days of Easter let us beg to open up to the Holy Spirit; we received it when we were baptized and confirmed, but now we must —as a last gift— make the Spirit to spring up from within us to take us where we would not have dared by ourselves.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ,
right before your Ascension
into heaven you told your
apostles to be His witnesses
to the ends of the earth upon receiving the Holy Spirit.
May I be similarly inspired to spread your Gospel message
in word and deed, according
to your will for me.
And may I do so prudently and joyfully, with your help, your guidance, and your grace! And remembering this glorious event, help me to seek what is above, Heaven, where you are seated at the right hand of God the Father!

The Feast of the Ascension
Ascension Day is the 40th day of Easter and commemorates the ascension of Jesus into heaven 39 days after resurrection on Easter Sunday. This Christian festival may also be known as The Feast of the Ascension.What is Ascension Day?
During the forty-day period before he ascended into heaven, it is believed that Jesus preached and intermingled with his apostles and disciples. According to tradition, Ascension Day was first celebrated in 68 AD, however the first written evidence of the Ascension Day Feast occurred in 385 AD. Today, Ascension Day is celebrated primarily by Catholics and Anglican Christians. According to the Western Christianity methods of calculating the dates of Easter, the earliest possible date for Ascension Day is 30th April, the latest possible date is 3rd June.How is Ascension Day celebrated? In the Catholic Church, the Feast of Ascension is a holy day of obligation (sometimes called holidays) when the faithful are obliged to attend Mass. Ten days after Ascension is Pentecost which commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. Pentecost ends the cycle of Easter related events in the Christian Calendar.

La Ascensión del Señor

«Mientras los bendecía, se separó de ellos y fue llevado al cielo»
Hoy, Ascensión del Señor, recordamos nuevamente la “misión que” nos sigue confiada: «Vosotros seréis testigos de estas cosas» (Lc 24,48). La Palabra de Dios sigue siendo actualidad viva hoy: «Recibiréis la fuerza del Espíritu Santo (...) y seréis mis testigos» (Hch 1,8) hasta los confines del mundo. La Palabra de Dios es exigencia de urgente actualidad: «Id al mundo entero y proclamad el Evangelio a toda la creación» (Mc 16,15).
En esta Solemnidad resuena con fuerza esa invitación de nuestro Maestro, que —revestido de nuestra humanidad— terminada su misión en este mundo, nos deja para sentarse a la diestra del Padre y enviarnos la fuerza de lo alto, el Espíritu Santo.
Pero yo no puedo sino preguntarme: —El Señor, ¿actúa a través de mí? ¿Cuáles son los signos que acompañan a mi testimonio? Algo me recuerda los versos del poeta: «No puedes esperar hasta que Dios llegue a ti y te diga: ‘Yo soy’. Un dios que declara su poder carece de sentido. Tienes que saber que Dios sopla a través de ti desde el comienzo, y si tu pecho arde y nada denota, entonces está Dios obrando en él».
Y éste debe ser nuestro signo: el fuego que arde dentro, el fuego que —como en el profeta Jeremías— no se puede contener: la Palabra viva de Dios. Y uno necesita decir: «¡Pueblos todos, batid palmas, aclamad a Dios con gritos de alegría! Sube Dios entre aclamaciones, ¡salmodiad para nuestro Dios, salmodiad!» (Sal 47,2.6-7).
Su reinado se esta gestando en el corazón de los pueblos, en tu corazón, como una semilla que está ya a punto para la vida. —Canta, danza, para tu Señor. Y, si no sabes cómo hacerlo, pon la Palabra en tus labios hasta hacerla bajar al corazón: —Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, dame espíritu de sabiduría y revelación para conocerte. Ilumina los ojos de mi corazón para comprender la esperanza a la que me llamas, la riqueza de gloria que me tienes preparada y la grandeza de tu poder que has desplegado con la resurrección de Cristo.

por esta celestial melancolía florece la esperanza y el desvelo.
Confiados en Tí, tras tu palabra podemos disfrutar de tu presencia
por la palabra que diste en despedida.
¡Acércanos al pan que da la vida, y en el tiempo final de
la existencia concédenos la paz
de tu acogida!

Fiesta de la Ascensión
La Fiesta de la Ascensión es una de las principales fiestas del año cristiano. Se celebra en el día 40 del Domingo de Pascua, por lo que siempre cae en jueves, pero en muchos lugars se pasa al domingo. La fiesta se remonta al menos al siglo IV, como es ampliamente atestiguado. La Ascensión es uno de los cinco principales hitos en la narración del evangelio de la vida de Jesús, los otros son el bautismo, la transfiguración, la crucifixión y la resurrección. Con su Ascensión al Cielo, Jesús nos abre las puertas para que podamos seguirle. La Ascensión es para todos los cristianos un símbolo de esperanza, pues sabemos que Cristo está sentado a la derecha del Padre, intercediendo por nosotros y que un día podremos llegar con Él a gozar de la felicidad eterna. Por esto, celebramos la fiesta con una Misa solemne. Durante la celebración de la Misa, puede haber una procesión solemne, con incienso. El crucifijo se adorna de blanco, se llevan luces y flores. ¿Qué nos enseña la Ascensión? Debemos luchar por ser perfectos y buenos para poder ir al Cielo con Jesús. Él vivió como todos nosotros su proyecto y lo fue perfeccionando día a día. Su proyecto no terminó con la Muerte, sino que siguió con su Resurrección y su Ascensión.Con la Ascensión, Jesús alcanza la meta final y es exaltado; se hace Señor y primogénito de sus hermanos. La plenitud sólo se alcanza al final y es un don de Dios. Jesús ha ascendido al Cielo y nos espera en la meta. Nosotros debemos trabajar para cumplir con nuestra misión en la tierra. Hay que vivir como Él, amar como Él, buscar el Reino de Dios.
