«You yourselves give them something to eat»
Today is the greatest day for a Christian's heart, because, after celebrating the institution of the Eucharist on the Holy Thursday, the Church now is trying to exalt this revered Sacrament, to make us adore it without limit. «Quantum potes, tantum aude...», «dare to do your best»: this is the invitation St. Thomas Aquinas makes us in a wonderful hymn of praise to the Eucharist. And, in a most admirable way, this invitation sums up what our heart's feelings should be before Christ's true presence in the Eucharist. To reciprocate such a humble, hidden, and so impressive donation, whatever we can do will never be enough. The Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth hides under the Sacramental species and offers himself to us as the food that feeds our souls. He is bread of angels and food of wayfarers. And it is bread of life we are being abundantly given, as the bread to avoid the weakness of those following him was miraculously multiplied to be distributed without any measure: «They ate and everyone had enough; and when they gathered up what was left, twelve baskets were filled with broken pieces» (Lk 9:17).
In front of this overabundance of love our reaction can never be stingy. An attentive and deep gaze of faith to this Divine Sacrament, must necessarily give way to a grateful prayer and to a passionate heart. In his sermons, St. Josemaria used to repeat the words a certain venerable bishop addressed to the priests he had just ordained: «Treat him well for me, treat him well!».
A quick conscience examination will help us realizing what we are to do to treat the Sacramented Jesus more delicately: the cleanliness of our soul —it must always be in grace to receive him—, the correctness of what we wear —as a sign of love and reverence—, the frequency with which we come closer to receive him, the number of times we visit him in the Tabernacle... Our attentions with our Lord in the Eucharist should be countless. Let us fight to receive and treat Jesus Sacramented with the purity, humility and devotion of his Blessed Mother, with the spirit and the fervor of the saints.

CORPUS CHRISTI
Though this Feast has been transferred to Sunday in the United States, the Church in most of the world will celebrate it on Thursday. Whenever it is celebrated, it is a richly significant day in Catholic life. Priests, accompanied by Deacons, lead the faithful in a solemn procession of the Consecrated Holy Eucharist throughout the Streets of the world.
The celebration of this Solemnity goes back to the thirteenth century. Pope Urban IV instituted it in 1264 for the entire Church.
He wanted it to be filled with joy and accompanied by hymns and a festive procession. He asked the great Western Church father, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose two Offices of prayer. St Thomas did so- along with five hymns - and they have nourished the piety of Christians for centuries. In one of them St. Thomas noted: "Material food first of all turns itself into the person who eats it, and as a consequence, restores his losses and increases his vital energies. Spiritual food, on the other hand, turns the person who eats it into Itself, and thus the proper effect of this sacrament is the conversion of man into Christ, so that he may no longer live for himself, but that Christ may live in Him. And as a consequence it has the double effect of restoring the spiritual losses caused by sins and defects and of increasing the power of the virtues".
In this celebration we proclaim our belief in the Real presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. We also proclaim that same Jesus lives within each one of us who are baptized into His Body, the Church. In fact, the entire Trinity takes up residence within us and, through that life in the Church and participation in the Sacraments we can live in the Trinity. This is the mystery of what we call communion. The Christian faith and life is about relationship, with the Father, in and through His Son Jesus and in Jesus Christ with one another for the sake of the world. The world into which we process is the world that God still loves so much that He continues to send His Son to save, recreate and transform it from within. The Corpus Christi procession symbolizes the ongoing redemptive mission of Jesus Christ and our participation in it.
I have fond memories of this beautiful event which stretch back into my early childhood. It is an extremely important day in my vocation, the anniversary of my ordination to the Diaconate in Christ. Since my ordination to ministry as a Deacon, it has come to signify my call to go "from the altar and ambo into the world." This is how I explain the ministry of a deacon to anyone who asks. We are clergy called to the world, as witnesses of Christ the Servant.

«Dadles vosotros de comer»
Hoy es el día más grande para el corazón de un cristiano, porque la Iglesia, después de festejar el Jueves Santo la institución de la Eucaristía, busca ahora la exaltación de este augusto Sacramento, tratando de que todos lo adoremos ilimitadamente. «Quantum potes, tantum aude...», «atrévete todo lo que puedas»: ésta es la invitación que nos hace santo Tomás de Aquino en un maravilloso himno de alabanza a la Eucaristía. Y esta invitación resume admirablemente cuáles tienen que ser los sentimientos de nuestro corazón ante la presencia real de Jesucristo en la Eucaristía. Todo lo que podamos hacer es poco para intentar corresponder a una entrega tan humilde, tan escondida, tan impresionante. El Creador de cielos y tierra se esconde en las especies sacramentales y se nos ofrece como alimento de nuestras almas. Es el pan de los ángeles y el alimento de los que estamos en camino. Y es un pan que se nos da en abundancia, como se distribuyó sin tasa el pan milagrosamente multiplicado por Jesús para evitar el desfallecimiento de los que le seguían: «Comieron todos hasta saciarse. Se recogieron los trozos que les habían sobrado: doce canastos» (Lc 9,17).
Ante esa sobreabundancia de amor, debería ser imposible una respuesta remisa. Una mirada de fe, atenta y profunda, a este divino Sacramento, deja paso necesariamente a una oración agradecida y a un encendimiento del corazón. San Josemaría solía hacerse eco en su predicación de las palabras que un anciano y piadoso prelado dirigía a sus sacerdotes: «Tratádmelo bien».
Un rápido examen de conciencia nos ayudará a advertir qué debemos hacer para tratar con más delicadeza a Jesús Sacramentado: la limpieza de nuestra alma —siempre debe estar en gracia para recibirle—, la corrección en el modo de vestir —como señal exterior de amor y reverencia—, la frecuencia con la que nos acercamos a recibirlo, las veces que vamos a visitarlo en el Sagrario... Deberían ser incontables los detalles con el Señor en la Eucaristía. Luchemos por recibir y por tratar a Jesús Sacramentado con la pureza, humildad y devoción de su Santísima Madre, con el espíritu y fervor de los santos.

HISTORIA DE LA FIESTA DEL CORPUS CHRISTI
La fiesta surgió en la Edad Media, cuando en 1208 la religiosa Juliana de Cornillon promueve la idea de celebrar una festividad en honor al Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo presente en la Eucaristía. Así, se celebra por primera vez en 1246 en la diócesis de Lieja (Bélgica).
En el año 1263, mientras un sacerdote celebraba la misa en la iglesia de la localidad de Bolsena (Italia), al romper la Hostia consagrada brotó sangre, según la tradición.1? (Una explicación posible de este suceso es la presencia en el pan del pigmento rojo prodigiosina segregado por la bacteria Serratia marcescens.2?). Este hecho, muy difundido y celebrado, dio un impulso definitivo al establecimiento como fiesta litúrgica del Corpus Christi. Fue instituida el 8 de septiembre de 1264 por el papa Urbano IV, mediante la bula Transiturus hoc mundo. A Santo Tomás de Aquino se le encargó preparar los textos para el Oficio y Misa propia del día, que incluye himnos y secuencias, como Pange Lingua (y su parte final Tantum Ergo), Lauda Sion, Panis angelicus, Adoro te devote o Verbum Supernum Prodiens.
En el Concilio de Vienne de 1311, Clemente V dará las normas para regular el cortejo procesional en el interior de los templos e incluso indicará el lugar que deberán ocupar las autoridades que quisieran añadirse al desfile.
En el año 1316, Juan XXII introduce la Octava con exposición del Santísimo Sacramento. Pero el gran espaldarazo vendrá dado por el papa Nicolás V, cuando en la festividad del Corpus Christi del año 1447, sale procesionalmente con la Hostia Santa por las calles de Roma.
En muchos lugares es una fiesta de especial relevancia. En España existe el dicho popular: Tres jueves hay en el año que relucen más que el sol: Jueves Santo, Corpus Christi y el día de la Ascensión, lo que da idea del arraigo de esta fiesta.
Las celebraciones del Corpus suelen incluir una procesión en la que el pan consagrado se exhibe en una custodia.
